How long does a session take
Generally the first session takes approx 2hrs, with subsequent sessions usually shorter. However this can vary according to the ability of the horse to open up and engage. Animals that are self-confident and trusting generally engage fairly quickly whereas horses that have a history of trauma and/or are suffering from chronic conditions can take longer. Every horse is unique and we are completely led by the individuals pace.
How many sessions will my horse require?
This depends entirely upon the horse. However, an owner can significantly reduce the need for a second session by following the aftercare directions diligently. Aftercare involves offering the selected oils daily to your horse for the next 1 - 2 weeks at home. As a general rule, we dont recommend a second session until at least 4 wks after the first.
What does a session involve?
Your horse will be allocated a stable with fresh water and hay. Depending upon presenting symptoms, a wide range of oils and plant extracts will be offered and observations and selections noted. The session will conclude when your horse indicates that he/she does not wish to engage any further. Your horse guides the complete session.
Can I stay with my horse whilst extracts are offered?
Yes – please do. This is particularly important as the plant extracts that are selected during the session will need to be reoffered daily at home for the following week/s. It is strongly advised that the person designated to continue the offering process at home is present during the session. It is important for you to note that anyone present during the session may also inhale the aroma of the oils. This may have implications for any medication that you are taking yourself. Also if you are pregnant, have any history of epilepsy or are taking any anti-coagulant drugs such as Warfarin. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area.
What about after-care?
Your horse is likely to select 8 to 10 oils/herbs/minerals. At the close of the session you will be given an appropriate amount of the chosen oils in order to offer to your horse over the next few days. You should offer the oils until your horse is no longer interested in inhaling or ingesting the oils. This is normally between one or two weeks.
How soon before I can compete with my horse?
If you are involved in a discipline that is subject to anti-doping regulations we recommend any offering of oils must have concluded at least 8 weeks before competing. This is because there is little formal drug testing of plant extracts and as such these cautionary measures are advised.
My horse is on medication, can I still bring him/her for a session?
When making initial contact with us your horses medical history and current medication will be discussed as a matter of course. Should your horse be on medication we shall consult with our vets as regards whether it is safe to work with zoopharmacognosy alongside the medication. If there is any doubt, we shall defer your horses session until the course of medication has been completed.
Are the oils included in the price or are they charged separately?
Plant extracts selected during the session are included in the session fee. Plant extracts dispensed to you to continue offering at home are charged for separately from the session fee.
I am unable to bring my horse to you - will you come to visit my horse?
We are sorry, but now due to workload Carly is unable to make yard visits unless under extremely exceptional circumstances.
