This is Freda whom Gana is currently fostering from the My Lovely Horse Rescue branch in Cork, Southern Ireland. She is such a sweet little lady and very lucky to have been found and rescued and is now receiving much needed TLC. However, unfortunately Freda has been diagnosed with severe liver damage which may have been caused by Ragwort. As a four year old she also has the physical development of a two year old due to malnourishment. Throughout the Winter, Freda was averaging 8 dungs in 12 hours. After attending one of our online workshops, Gana began offering herbs using the Zoopharmacognosy approach. As a result of regular offering Freda is now averaging 4 dungs in 12 hours. Gana’s Vet felt the frequent dunging was a sign of liver damage and that the reduction in the no's of passing of dung is a good sign that Freda's liver is on the mend. Freda has been selecting various herbs and oils over the last 2 months including the following: Neem fixed oil, Wormwood powder, Milk thistle powder, Slippery Elm powder, Marigolds dried herb, Liquorice root powder, Dandelion root dried herb (500g almost daily), Cleavers and Nettles. Nearly all of these extracts are selected to support and rejuvenate the liver. Freda’s selections make perfect sense! You can find the herbs mentioned above at our online shop www.whitethornherbals.com Please note that Aromatherapy oils are not suitable for use in Zoopharmacognosy.

Comfrey is starting to grow under the trees at Whitethorn Farm here in County Sligo, in Ireland! Comfrey is a powerful, supportive herb for horses when using the self-selection Zoopharmacognosy approach. Horses may select Comfrey when suffering with gastric ulcers, wounds, bruising, inflammatory conditions, fractures, as well as tendon and soft tissue injuries. In the Zoopharmacognosy approach we offer the dried herb and/or the macerate. (Comfrey is not available as an essential oil) You may find this wonderful plant in damp areas such as near lakes and ditches, so keep an eye out for the plant! Do not confuse Comfrey with Docks. The Comfrey leaf is furry and matt green as opposed to the shiny green that the Dock plant boasts! Your horse may choose to ingest the freshly picked herb, or you could pick some to bring home and dry in the oven / a dehydrator. Comfrey is also commonly given the name "Knitbone" as it is known to excel in the repair of fractures when selected due to it's allantoin content. And for the gardeners of you out there, Comfrey is also known as nature's fertilizer as it is extremely rich in Potassium so it is a supportive and organic food source for plants. All in all it's a very useful plant all round! Go to our online shop to learn more about Comfrey - www.whitethornherbals.com

Cosmos's digestive system was struggling to maintain health shown by mucus and blood in his stools. Sinead had wormed Cosmos and taken him to the vet for treatment but the symptoms continued and deteriorated further. The Spirulina sample sent out in the Canine Workshop Workpack was demolished by Cosmos and after self-selecting Spirulina for a week his stools were healthy and lacked any mucus or blood. Another lucky dog whose guardian trusted his ability to self-select! You can see Cosmos's other pack members all below awaiting their turn at the 'Spirulina Bar'! After the success of our Live online Equine Level 2 workshops we are excited to announce dates for our Equine and Canine Level 1 online workshops. Both Level 1's will be three days over 2 weekends. This is a new format to allow for participants to practice and avail of support in between the weekends to give them the best possible start on the 'offering' and 'selecting' process. Both workshops are interactive with participants receiving a Work Pack which
We are delighted to announce that we have successfully sourced from the continent a lovely rich Organic Co2 Rosehip extract (Rosa canina). This type of distillation process ensures absolutely no solvent residue and the product (human grade) contains a broad level of constituents which includes high levels of Linoleic acid (essential fatty acid belonging to the omega-3 fatty acids group) which has been proven to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandin resulting in reduced inflammation. Older animals that have joint issues or are arthritic and younger growing animals select Rosehip Co2. If you feel your animal may benefit from Rosehip Co2, click here to purchase at our online shop. There are various Carly was absolutely delighted to be invited by Lisa Tully, Animal intuitive and communicator, to talk about her work at a webinar themed 'Caring for Animals in a Challenging Human World'. Lisa talked for a while about the animals she has helped and then Carly explained how Zoopharmacognosy can help animals at this challenging time including recommending extracts to offer for fear and anxiety. These included Frankincense, Violet Leaf, Valerian (floral water and essential oil), both the Chamomiles (Roman & German) as well as oils for comfort such as Jasmine, Rose and Linden Blossom (floral water and essential oil). Lisa reminded us that the animals we share our lives with (dogs in particular) are often affected by our own state of health and so it's important to look after ourselves alongside our animals. If you wish to see a recording of it (it's free!) click here. Our next Webinar, called Your pet and Zoopharmacognosy is on Sun 7th Feb 2021. Click here to register. Hope you see you there! In late November we held our first Canine Zoopharmacognosy workshop online where 8 participants and their furry friends all came together on Zoom to learn how to use the self-selection approach with their Dogs. Some were horse owners and had already completed our Equine workshop and are already using this approach with their horses but were keen to learn the different techniques employed when offering herbs and other extracts to dogs. (Click here for details of our next Canine Online Live 3-day Wksp) It was great fun with several different interactive elements ensuring no 'Death by Powerpoint'

Hi! My name is Carly and I head up the Whitethorn Team. I am also a lifelong lover of Dogs and Horses. When my mare was having regular episodes of Colic I looked around for a solution and found Applied Zoopharmacognosy (also called the self-selection method and free choice botanicals). I was so impressed that I trained in this fascinating effective herbal approach and have gone on now to train others. That was over a decade ago and I am now part of the Whitethorn Team and work with horses and dogs all over the world to help them restore emotional and physical health. As part of the support we offer, we also supply herbal remedies at our online shop along with providing workshops and one-to-one mentoring (Onsite & Online) on how to work with them. We truly hope that you enjoy and maybe learn a little from our blog. Carly and the Whitethorn Team, Sligo Ireland Archives
